Scooter Safety in Vietnam: 5 Essential Tips to Avoid Accidents

Riding a motorbike in Vietnam is the ultimate travel freedom. It’s how you find the hidden waterfalls of Ha Giang and the best Banh Mi stalls in Hanoi. But let’s be honest: Vietnamese traffic is famous for being chaotic.

The overwhelming majority of scooter accidents here aren’t caused by bad luck—they are caused by misunderstanding the “unwritten rules” of the road.

At Rentabike Vietnam, we don’t just rent bikes; we want you to come back safe. Whether you are on a manual Honda XR 150 or an automatic Honda Vision, this guide will move you from “nervous newbie” to confident rider.

The Unwritten Rules: "Flow Like Water"

Forget what you learned in the West. In Vietnam, traffic is fluid.

  • The “Flow of Water” Concept: If you stop suddenly, you become a rock in the stream, and people will crash into you. Move predictably. Use your mirrors, signal early, and merge slowly.
  • Right of Way by Size: The hierarchy is simple and brutal: Trucks > Buses > Cars > Motorbikes > Pedestrians. Never assume a bus will slow down for you.
  • Beware the “Lead Ninja”: This is a local term for riders (often on Honda Leads) covered head-to-toe in sun-protection gear. Their peripheral vision is limited. If you see one, give them extra space — they may turn without looking.

Mastering Vietnamese Intersections

Most collisions happen here. In Vietnam, a red light is often treated as a “suggestion” by locals, especially in the first 5 seconds after it changes.

Pro Tip: This is why the Amber light usually means, ‘STOP’.

  • Wait 2 Seconds: When your light turns green, wait 2 seconds before going. This avoids the late-runners from the other side.
  • The “Honk” is Your Friend: In the West, honking is rude. In Vietnam, it means “I am here, don’t hit me.” Give a short, polite beep-beep when passing anyone or entering a blind corner. Why try to learn the langauge of the horn here?
  • Blind Spots: Vietnamese trucks have massive blind spots. Never ride alongside the wheels of a truck or bus. If you can’t see the driver in their mirror, they can’t see you.

A 5$ helmet for a $5 head

You will see locals wearing plastic caps that look like baseball helmets. These offer zero protection. To be honest, they don’t even cost $5.

  • Quality helmets: At Rentabike, we include a quality helmet with every rental. We have a range of full-face and open face helmets that protect you.
  • The Magic of ABS: If you are renting for a long trip (like the Ha Giang Loop), consider upgrading to a bike with ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) like the XR150 or the CB500x. In the rain, grabbing the brakes on a non-ABS bike can cause a skid. ABS helps to prevent this.

The 2025 Legal Update: Zero Tolerance

Decree 168/2024 officially took effect on January 1, 2025, and it changes everything for expats and tourists.

  • The Limit is ZERO: Vietnam has a strict 0.0mg/mL alcohol limit. You cannot have “just one beer” with dinner and drive.

The Fines are Massive:

  • Low Level: 2–3 Million VND + 4 license points deducted.
  • High Level: 8–10 Million VND ($300-400 USD) + License revocation for 24 months.

The Reality: Police checkpoints (some open, some undercover) are common in Da Nang and Hanoi. Don’t risk it. Grab a GrabBike—it costs $2. For more details on legality, start with our Traffic Violations and Fines blog.

Emergency Protocol: What to Do If You Crash

Even the best riders can have bad luck. Save this information to your phone so you have it offline.

The “Crash Card

(Screenshot this for your trip)

  • Ambulance: 115 (But taxis are often faster).
  • Police: 113.
  • Vietnamese Phrase: “Tôi bị tai nạn, xin giúp đỡ” (I had an accident, please help).

Top International Hospitals:

  • Hanoi: French Hospital (024 3577 1100).
  • Da Nang: Vinmec International (0236 3711 111).
  • HCMC: FV Hospital (028 5411 3333).

Important: Travel insurance does not cover motorbiking unless you have a valid motorbike license in your home country + an International Driving Permit (IDP). Not sure if your license is valid? Check our Licensing blog.

FAQ

Yes, if you start slow. We recommend renting an automatic scooter and sticking to the coast or countryside first.

Avoid rush hour in Hanoi/HCMC until you are comfortable.

Defensive riding. Pretend you are invisible. Assume every car is going to turn in front of you without signaling.

Yes. Under the new 2025 laws, police are stricter than ever. Riding without a license can void your insurance and lead to your bike being impounded for 7 days. You need a 1968 Convention IDP or a local Vietnamese license.

Speed limits vary by zone.

Urban Areas (Cities/Towns): 60km/h (if there is a hard median strip) or 50km/h (if no median).

Rural Areas: 70km/h (with median) or 60km/h (no median).

Note: Speed cameras with Ai are becoming very common in Vietnam!

Honesty is the best policy. At Rentabike Vietnam, we don’t profit from repairs. We also want to know what has happened to the bikes so that we can make sure the ‘next rental’ customer does not have any problem due to a poor quality repair or part.

  • Minor cosmetic marks: We often overlook these.
  • Broken parts: We simply charge you the local market rate for the replacement part. We strongly advise taking photos of your bike before you ride away so there are no disputes later.

Ready to Ride?

Don’t let the traffic scare you—riding Vietnam is the adventure of a lifetime. Just ride smart, wear the gear, and follow the flow.
